Student Teacher Timeline

Prior to Week 1

  • Complete all necessary documentation for required ID credentials. 

  • Contact elementary and secondary mentor teachers to confirm start/end dates. 

  • Attend required School of Music orientation to meet the university supervisors and review internship requirements.

  • Record intern seminar dates and all other pertinent deadlines.

  • Review guidelines for creating an e-Portfolio.

Weeks 1-3 (Begin Placement 1)

  • Upon first visit to the school, report to main office to obtain parking regulations and directions to the music facility.

  • Observe the mentor teacher to learn class routines and expectations. 

  • Assist as needed. 

  • Co-plan/co-teach beginning with lessons assigned by the mentor teacher. 

  • Begin video recording teaching sessions. 

  • Participate in student activities, parent conferences, meetings, staff development, etc. 

  • Update Log of Hours.

Weeks 4-6

  • Move from co-teaching to independent teaching assignments. 

  • Confer daily with the mentor teacher. Communicate with the university supervisor as needed. 

  • Attend intern seminars at Mason. 

  • Select an exemplary video, and complete a Video Observation Report.

  • Continue to gather exemplars and upload to the e-Portfolio

  • Download and submit Progress Report to the mentor teacher. Forward to the university supervisor when complete.

  • Continue to update Log of Hours.

Weeks 7-8

  • Download and submit Progress Report to the mentor teacher. Forward to the university supervisor when complete.

  • Withdraw from independent teaching responsibilities. 

  • Observe or assist in other classes and resource programs. 

  • Complete Log of Hours and obtain signatures from the mentor teacher and university supervisor.

Weeks 9-11 (Begin Placement 2)
